Sociologist: Mob Mentality has Grown Out of Student Frustration

A sociologist who studies violent behavior says incidents like last weekend's riot near Minnesota State University in Mankato may become more common.

Dr. Jack Levin is a sociology professor at Northeastern University in Boston who's studied the dynamics of riots.

He says the mob mentality has grown out of student frustration with authority, as police around the country have cracked down on drinking and drugs more than in past years.

College students on their own might never act this way, he says, but feel safer acting out in a group.
